'Andor' Season One as Art

A discussion about what makes 'Andor' Season One a work of great literature, and then a preview of Season Two.
1

My friend, and fellow ‘Andor’ lover, Joseph Tabenkin, and I discuss what we love about ‘Andor’, what we find so meaningful in the story and themes. Then chat about what we’re looking forward to in Season 2. If you haven’t seen ‘Andor’ before, we make a pitch for it in Part I of the podcast. In Part II, we spoil S1 as we do in depth into the story and ideas. And in Part III, we discuss the upcoming second (and final) season which starts on April 22nd, 2025.

Here are some time stamps:

Part I - 0:03 - Recommending Season 1. A non-spoiler discussion of what we love about Andor and how we’d recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it before. We touch on the differences between Andor and other Star Wars stories (as well as other popular shows) and we hint at how the development of the plot drives the story into ever greater and greater, inexorable conflicts.

Part II - 15:17 - Season 1 Deep Dive. Now the spoilers come! We discuss the ideas and themes that animate the story, that turn the story, for us, into more than entertainment—that turn it into art. We look at how specific ideas are subtly dramatized, including ideas about the nature of tyranny (18:30), the reasons for Cassian’s change from pessimist to devoted rebel (27:10), and the central theme that illuminates Cassian’s as well as other storylines (54:27). I also discuss my favorite scene of Season 1 (104:20). And Joseph makes his pitch for re-watching Season 1 (1:06:57).

Part III - 1:11:15 - Previewing Season 2. We look forward to what we’re excited to see in Season 2, including the questions we’ll be asking ourselves and what we hope to see with favorite characters.

‘Andor’ Season 2 will be released on Tuesday, April 22nd, 9pm ET/6pm PT, on Disney +. I might be doing more podcast discussions reacting to the new episodes each week! Stay tuned!
